Why Pastured Pork?
Pigs are natural omnivores; they won’t survive on grass alone like a cow but are designed to eat a little bit of everything. That’s why we refer to our pigs as "pastured" or “pasture raised” instead of “grass-fed” like we do our beef.
The guiding principles are always the same; raise the animals in an ethical, compassionate way and give them a life (behaviours, diet, habitat, etc.) that is most natural to them.
We feed our pigs a diet of fermented non-GMO grains, raw high fat grass fed cow's milk, raw eggs from pastured chickens, and some fruits and vegetables from the ranch. They are free to eat grasses, roots, grubs, bugs, and whatever else they want in our pastures.
Fermenting grains for our pigs means two things:
- The nutrients in the grains are more digestible and bio-available
- Fermentation is the only food process that increases the nutrient value of a food
Pigs have the handy ability to convert vegetable and plant matter to the fatty acids EPA and DHA which reduce inflammation, reduce cardiovascular disease and promote good health for us when we eat pork. It comes as no surprise, pastured pork contains much higher concentrations of these beneficial fatty acids.
Added bonus, there are no antibiotics, animal byproducts or growth stimulants given to our pigs!
Because pasture raised pigs spend a lot of time in the sun there is more Vitamin D in the fat than their commercial-barn raised counterparts. Did you know that pork lard makes the very best pie crusts? And with it’s high heat tolerance it’s great for all general cooking – pan frying, browning, deep frying, baking...for both sweet and savoury dishes.
We know that by providing our pigs a healthy, outdoor, free-range life and a diverse, GMO-free diet, we’ll not only improve their health and quality of life, but also achieve an end product of the highest quality with a beneficial ecological impact. Let's not overlook that it produces amazingly tasty bacon!
Simply put, pastured pork...
- Is good for your body - it contains higher levels of nutrients than commercially raised pork
- Contains twice the amount of anti-inflammatory vitamin E than commercially raised pork
- Is loaded three times the amount of vitamin D than commercially raised pork - an vital nutrient for a life of health and wellbeing
- Provides elevated amounts of EPA and DHA - nutrients vital for the anti-inflammatory processes of the human body and cardiovascular health
- Is an excellent source of B6, niacin (B3), and vitamin B12
- Tastes better - the flavour comes from their diet and plenty of exercise
Why Milk Fed?
We have a Jersey milk cow named Clairabelle on the ranch that we hand milk twice daily.
We make our own mozzarella, cottage cheese, ice cream, sweetened condensed milk, butter, and more. Some of the byproducts of that production, like whey, skim, buttermilk and even whole milk go to the pigs. We add the milk to fermented grain when we feed the pigs twice a day.
These grains are fermented for 36 hours so that they are easier for the pigs to digest and assimilate.
The milk is high in the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K and it makes the grasses and roots they eat more bio-available. We're using food to help make their food better for them!
Raising pigs like this takes a ton of work and even more time. We get to hand milk a cow twice/day so we can feed pigs?
Why not just build a barn and pack 500 in it?
In 2016, Coen Farms had their milk fed pastured pork that was fed fermented grains tested at the University of Toronto's Department of Nutritional Sciences for its omega 3:6 ratio.
The results were amazing - this method we both use to produce pork had "5x more omega 3s than anything you can find in the supermarket".
The tests even showed the presence of "omega 3 oils commonly found in fish"!
The lead scientist, Dr. Richard Bazinet, said this type of pork is “at the higher end of the range for the other pasture guys, this is likely because of what [we] are feeding them.”
Thank you Takota Coen and Coen Farms for this valuable research!
BellMar Ranch & Gardens Corn & Soy Free Pastured Yorkshire Pork
Yorkshire pigs, also called Large White, are known for their easy-going demeanor and are some of the friendliest pigs you can find. They were originally introduced in the 18th centruy by crossing the indigenous white pig of northern England with the smaller, fatter, white Chinese pig.
Although originally a bacon breed, the Yorkshire rose to prominence in the lean meat category during the 20th century and remains there today.
We raise our pigs (and all of our other animals) in a way that prioritizes quality over quantity, nutrition over cheapness, craft over assembly lines, and our health as top priority.
The method is quite simple - raise the pigs the way they were put on Earth to be raised, and their meat quality will reward us with delicious flavor and enhanced nutrition.
We only sell pork raised the best way possible – outdoors on fresh pasture, supplemented with NON-GMO corn-free and soy-free fermented grains, and raw milk... without antibiotics, medications or hormones, and frozen and vacuum sealed at the peak of freshness.
- Pasture Raised - On real pasture - that's why pasture raised pork is known to have more Omega 3's compared to commercially raised pigs, because they are eating grass/forage and are exposed to the sunlight
- Raised Outdoors - Grocery store pork never sees the outdoors...ever
- Hormone and Antibiotic free - our pigs are never injected with anything and we do not use any drugs, medications, anti-biotics, hormones or vaccinations in their feed or water
- Humanely Raised - Our pigs are raised in a large mobile floorless pasture pen that gets moved regularly. They have the critical shade and cool ground to withstand any hot Alberta days.
- Frozen & Vacuum Sealed at the peak of freshness
