The thermometer in the kitchen says 12 °C right now.
That’s 53.6 °F.
I’m wearing long johns, two T-shirts, jeans, and the same three hoodies I wear outside, typing this while the Gem Pac cookstove does everything it can.
We don’t keep the house cold on purpose.
It's cold because that’s all the cookstove can do overnight, and we don't have the resources for the natural-gas bill to run a furnace.
The animals get propane heaters in the barn, pond pumps and fires on waterers, and extra hay.
The humans get:
- The cookstove
- A kettle of hot water
- And the knowledge that every dollar spent on natural gas is a dollar not spent on feed
We dress like we’re outside.
We sleep with extra blankets...and we stay healthy anyway.
This is what it actually costs to keep animals alive when it’s –25 °C outside, and we can’t afford the natural-gas bill to heat...it’s why our beef is worth every penny.
That’s why our beef is worth every penny.
Thanks for helping me feed my family through you feeding yours.
